Cowboy coding is a term normally applied where there is no real plan for software development. Things just get coded, and I guess that’s kind of what I do. The thing is, that even with the best plan in the world, things change. I just like to get on and code. Source control? Nah, I just change things. :)
I’ve always been a bit like that and although it may not be the most efficient way of coding, it’s fun to see things evolve. I’ll often write something, then think “shit, that doesn’t quite meet requirements” and then re-write it. Each iteration the object becomes more what I want it to be and I actually end up getting quite attached to my projects. I like watching a project develop like that.
New software project coming along well. Garbage collection and GDI+ getting slightly on my nerves but it’s all happening……

No time recently to update this site. Work is still ongoing but has been put on the back burner for a while to make way for a massive new commercial software project I’m working on. I’m not releasing any details yet, other than the fact that coding has been ongoing for coming up to a month. It’s early days so details on what the software is, etc, etc, won’t be about for sometime as yet. The development timeframe for version 1 is expected to be about 12-24 months - the rest, I’ll leave to speculation.
So as you can see, a rather large project, although that doesn’t mean I’ve totally forgotten about this site. I’m still here. ;-)

No updates on the blog for a while as I just haven’t got around to it. Since doing the initial set up of the site there’s not so much of a reason for me to come on her other than to check the forums now and again or upload an update to the tree. Besides that whenever I seem to try and come on here the webhost is playing up. I thought I’d write this blog entry then the bloody thing went down for 10 minutes. You get what you pay for.
I’ve been thinking about moving to a different host recently. I guess I’ll see how things pan out. The site only gets a few visitors a day anyway so it’s not that critical. It’s main purpose now is to hopefully put me in touch with other family members, who I otherwise would not know about. I haven’t received any messages from long lost relatives yet, but we’ll see.
Uploaded a new file the other day - lots more names and facts in there. I haven’t bought any certificates recently so maybe I’ll get a couple in the coming weeks to spur my interest again.
Laters.

ARGH!
I can see the point of UAC. Linux has had something similar to this for years. The problem is that, most days I need to do something on my PC that requires administrator priveleges. Why is that a problem?
It wouldn’t be if UAC worked properly - but it doesn’t seem to.
I can’t seem to save a file from Ancestry.co.uk to a directory I make myself on the C: drive with UAC on.
I can’t install many programs I need to use with UAC on.
I can’t run many programs I need to use with UAC on.
Making changes to permissions to try and fix above problems seems to have no affect with UAC on.
I’m sure there’s a way around all these problems, but I just don’t have the patience or the time to sort them out. After all XP didn’t have UAC and I never had any problems there. If I weigh it up - what is UAC doing for me?
The answer at the moment is nothing. It’s just making eveything 40 times harder with no immediate benefit.
I’ve just spent five days trying to live with it. At least it can be turned off.
Bye bye UAC……

I just worked out that this year alone, so far, I’ve spent about £370 chasing this obsession. That’s made up of about 16 birth/marriage/death certificates, over £100 on petrol for various field trips, over £100 on various directories and CD’s. In fact, in reality it’s probably more like £500 because that doesn’t include train/tube fares and other costs on field trips, hours spent, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Can’t think of anything else I’d have rather spent it on though…… so whatever!
Best order some more stuff. :)
